As a chiropractor, I believe that treatment should ideally be started before getting pregnant to improve the spinal posture and biomechanics to encourage a healthy gestation and labour. Some disorders in infancy, particularly those involving cranial distortion patterns are considered by some chiropractors to be caused by intra-uterine constraint due to postural imbalances in the Mum and not just as a result of birth trauma (eg the use of forceps or ventouse etc). However treatment can be initiated at any time to correct relatively common syndromes experienced in pregnancy eg low back pain, neck pain, migraines and neck related headaches and dizziness. Advice on posture, nutrition and exercise is also provided by your chiropractor to make the entire process as happy and healthy as possible.
Chiropractic is a very safe and effective treatment for pregnant women. The chiropractor
utilises gentle techniques to balance the musculoskeletal structures which are put
under stress during pregnancy and labour. The chiropractor is well educated about
all medical aspects of the process.
